What is it?
The Insanity workout program is a total body conditioning program developed by Shaun T, who is the trainer on the Insanity DVDs. Its objective is to help people become leaner and ripped beyond what they thought possible. The Insanity workout is based on the principle of maximum exertion for sustained periods, alternating between short rest periods. It is a 60 day program, which requires working out 6 days a week. The program is divided into two 4-week segments with a recovery week in between.  Each daily workout is about 35-45 minutes long in the first phase and about an hour long in the second phase.

Most of the exercises use one’s own body weight as resistance. Hence no equipment or weights are required. The primary focus of these exercises is the core and that is illustrated throughout the program with plyometric drills on top of nonstop intervals of strength, power, resistance and abs and core training exercises. There is a lot of running in place, jumping around, squats and pushups involved. All workouts start with a warm up of 7-10 minutes.

What to expect
The Insanity workout program is possibly the hardest program ever put on DVD. It is an extreme and physically demanding workout. The workout starts by testing your current fitness levels. Shaun T’s dynamic assessment shows people a mostly unexpected yet realistic picture of their physical prowess. People considering themselves in peak condition are astonished to find otherwise. It is not suitable for beginners and for people who are extremely out of shape. There is a risk of injury to the knees, wrists, shoulders, and the lower back along with other lower body joints. Hence maintaining perfect form is vital during exercise. Shaun T’s mantra is much the same: “Form over speed”, he emphasizes. If you have knee, lower back, hip or ankle issues this program is not recommended. It is not wise to put your body through such a brutal routine and risk injury again. Even the most able-bodied person needs to summon everything he has in him just to complete the program.

General view of people who have completed the program
People from both sexes can take advantage of this unique yet merciless regimen, though tremendous will power and motivation is required to succeed. This is not just another high intensity workout. It literally requires all your strength, endurance and stamina. The warm up itself is more rigorous then some programs and takes some doing even though Shaun T is a great motivator, who pushes you to the edge or even over it.  Although no equipment is required, you still need a gym mat and footwear that can support your knees and lower body joints during exercise.

In order to get through the whole program, a proper diet with 5 meals a day needs to be taken. Each workout burns up to a 1000 calories so naturally your daily intake has to be adjusted accordingly. The elite nutrition plan is a great resource in helping you to that effect. You will not get the desired outcome without eating properly, as suggested in the guide. It is important that you consult your physician before beginning.

If your aim is increasing upper body muscle definition and size, the Insanity workout is not big on sculpting and thus probably not for you. Similarly losing more than 30 pounds is generally not a realistic goal. Keep in mind that you need to be in reasonably good shape before you get into this workout.

This program has the potential to transform you into the best shape of your life. The real question is: Are you game enough?
