If you wanted to lose weight, you had to stop eating fat. That was the rule. Now we know that some level of fat in the diet is necessary for good health and will actually help us lose weight because it helps send satiety signals to the brain. Good fats are found in olive oil, fish, and avocados.
Do not cut all carbohydrates from your diet. With the advent of Atkins and some other popular diets, carbohydrates have gotten a bad name lately. The problem is that most people do not differentiate between good and bad carbohydrates. They just keep the "eat no carbs," rule in their heads when trying to lose weight. Refined carbohydrates like processed sugar and white flour need to be avoided, but plenty of good carbohydrates in the form of vegetables and high-fiber fruits are very good for you. Sometimes you actually have to eat more in order to lose weight. I know it sounds counterproductive, but sometimes eating more is the key to weight loss. This is part of the reason why highly restrictive diets like the 1000 calorie a day diet do not work well for most people. That doesn't mean that you should go out and binge on pizza, but you have to remember that your body is a machine that needs fuel. If it does not get the fuel that it needs, it will not function properly.
You will not have energy for your workouts and your metabolism will slow down. Be sure to include three meals per day and a few small snacks to keep things running. There are many mistakes other than these that people make when losing weight, but these are the most common. Cutting out all fat or all carbohydrates is based on fad hype and should be avoided. Skipping meals should also be avoided because you need the energy. Diets that work involve a balanced range of foods and nutrients at regular times throughout the day.
